Our History
In 2025, after forty years in shipping, I quit my job to pursue my life long dream of running a vineyard. This is a small family vineyard run by one man who waited a long time to get here. Our winemaker grew up on the very same land and actually planted the vineyard in the late 1990's. We currently make two wines: a small batch of rosé called Rabbit Hole Rosé and a Pinot Noir under the Grumpy Vines name. We only produce around 3,500 bottles a year between them.
Our Vineyard
The vineyard sits across 1.1 hectares in Alexandra, Central Otago, one of the world's southernmost wine regions, sitting at 45° south on the same latitude as Bordeaux's mirror image. It's desert country - hot summers, frosty winters, and not much rainfall to speak of.
Vines planted here have to work for everything they produce, stressed vines make smaller crops of more intensely flavoured fruit, which turns out to suit Pinot Noir very well!
Our Wines
Pinot Noir is the wine Central Otago is known for, and we've tried not to overcomplicate it. Expect classic Central Otago character: dark cherry and a touch of spice
The rosé is called Rabbit Hole Rosé. It's pale and dry, and is meant for drinking outdoors with people you love. The name is a nod to the rabbit holes that surround Grumpy Vines (and that I often fall into!)
